Gas Safety

To ensure your safety and to meet our legal obligations, we must service every SAHA-owned gas appliance each year. We must do this even if the appliance seems to be working properly. The contractor who visits to carry out the service and safety check will carry out a number of tests on the gas appliances and will give you a copy of the Gas Safety Certificate so that you know that all is well. The tests are designed to make sure that you are not at risk from carbon monoxide poisoning or unsafe appliances. Always be available at the time when a contractor comes to service your appliance. (Please note, Not giving access to a contractor contravenes the terms in your tenancy agreement which could result in losing your tenancy.)

For safety reasons you must never use a gas appliance if you think it isn’t working properly. Signs of a faulty appliance include yellow or orange flames, soot or stains around the appliance, and pilot lights that frequently blow out and remember:

  • Never use a gas appliance if you think it's not working properly
  • Never cover an appliance or block the air vents
  • Never block or obstruct any fixed ventilation grills or air bricks
  • Never block or cover outside flues
Remember:

If you smell gas please:

  • Check if a gas appliance has been left on and if so, switch it off
  • Turn off the supply at the meter
  • DON'T smoke or use a naked flame
  • DON'T use electrical switches
  • Open windows and doors
  • Telephone Transco on 0800 111 999
  • Telephone our Customer Service Centre on 0800 970 6363 (Free from most landlines) to let us know the action you have taken

Early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning could include a throbbing headache, tiredness, nausea and weakness but you could just as easily fall asleep and experience none of these.

If you are concerned that your appliances have not received an annual gas safety check then please contact the Customer Service Centre on 0800 970 6363 (Free from most landlines).
